How to prepare your pet for International Shipping
One of the biggest mistakes people make is not preparing their pets for international travel. Preparing your pet for international travel can make their travel experience a lot less stressful. We recommend doing the following before your pet travels:
- Check that your type of pet is fit for travel – Some pets travel better than others for instance Snub-nose dog breeds don’t travel well by air. Ask the professionals about your pet.
- Familiarize your pet with its enclosure – Whenever possible we recommend introducing your pet to its travel enclosure a few weeks prior to the traveling date. Place a soft familiar blanket on the floor of the enclosure and make them as comfortable in the enclosure as possible
- Make sure your pet is comfortable being handled in its enclosure – Once your pet is familiar with its enclosure start moving them whilst they are in it to get them used to being moved when they are inside the enclosure.
- Expose them to airport sounds – Because some pets like dogs are very sensitive to sounds play some recordings of sounds that your pet might be exposed to when traveling.
- Vet visits and vaccinations – Take your pet to the vet for a health certificate and a general checkup before traveling and get all their vaccinations done with sufficient time left. IE the rabies vaccine needs to be done at least 30 days prior to traveling.
- Microchipping – If possible get your pet microchipped before travelling. Some countries require some pets to be microchipped.
- Ask your pet transport agent – Ask your pet travel provider for any additional prep work for your specific animal.
