How to prepare your pet for travel

Not preparing their animals for travel is one of the biggest mistakes owners make. It might be a lot less traumatic for your pet to travel if you prepare them for it. Before letting your pet travel, we advise taking the following actions: 

• Check that your Pet is fit for travel- Some pet breeds travel better than others; for example, snub-nosed dog breeds are better shipped by ground than by air. Consult the experts about your pet.
• Expose your pet to their enclosure – We advise introducing your pet to its travel enclosure as early as possible, ideally a few weeks before the trip. Make them as comfortable as you can in the enclosure by spreading a warm, familiar blanket on the floor etc.
• Handle the enclosure with the pet in it – Once your pet is comfortable in the enclosure, start moving them inside of it to get them accustomed to being moved while they are inside.
• Expose them to sounds – Since some animals, such as dogs, are extremely sensitive to noise, play some recordings of sounds that your pet may encounter when travelling.
• Health certificates and vacinations – Before travelling, bring your pet to the vet for a health certificate, a general checkup, and to receive all necessary vaccines. Vaccination against rabies is required at least 30 days before travel.
• Get your pet Microchiped – Before travelling, if at all feasible, get your pet microchipped. Some states demand that certain animals be microchipped.
